Abstract:
We are currently facing two major and connected issues: the declining world reserves of fossil fuels, and rapidly rising CO2 level. The solution to both issues is to take advantage of alternative, sustainable, and green energy sources (such as wind, solar, and bio-mass) with efficient energy storage and integration. The rechargeable battery is the current leading technology for energy storage and it is widely applied in many areas including electronics and electrical vehicles. We have carried out fundamental research to address the structure-property relationship of electrode materials in order to ultimately obtain safer and cheaper rechargeable Li, Na, and Mg ion batteries with high energy density and power capacity. In/ex situ solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), complemented by X-ray techniques and first principles calculations, has been employed in these studies.
Besides battery electrode materials, applications of solid-state NMR to biological, biomimetic, and energy conversion materials will also be briefly discussed.
