Program Objectives

 

To enhance and broaden basic   knowledge and skill in chemical engineering and technology, and cultivate   analytical and critical thinking, logical reasoning, and ability to solve   issues in the areas in chemical engineering as well as lifelong learning. To   use modern engineering tools, resources and techniques appropriate to the   discipline to solve broadly-defined chemical engineering problems   systematically and to reach substantiated conclusions. To encourage   students to uphold values, attitudes and ideals to remain professional,   ethical and humanistic, and at all times adhere to ethical standards and code   of practice relevant to the discipline. To develop good teamwork,   communication and interpersonal skills, as well as socially- and   culturally-sensitive to engage effectively with the professional community   and society at large. To prepare students with leadership qualities with   sufficient knowledge on management, business practices and entrepreneurship   to be able to function as an individual, or leaders in diverse technical or   non-technical teams.

 

Requirements of   Research Ability and Other Aspects

The general outcomes for the graduate students are: (1) able to apply   knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals and engineering   specializations to solve broadly-defined chemical engineering problems   systematically and to reach substantiated conclusions, and also keep track of    the cutting-edge development and the latest trend in this field; (2) demonstrate   an understanding of the impact of science and engineering practices, taking   into account the need for sustainable development;(3) demonstrate   teamwork, communication and interpersonal skills, as well as socially- and   culturally-sensitive; (4)recognize the need for professional development, and   to engage in independent and lifelong learning.

In   addition, publication quota required for graduation   must comply with regulation promulgated by   the College of chemistry and chemical engineering, Xiamen university.

Student should take part in at least 40 seminars,   including oral presentations in various meetings, conferences, or group   seminars. The student should submit a summary report on the academic   lectures, and the institute will be responsible for attendance and   assessment.

Students should participate in at   least 1 national or International Academic Conference / Forum and present   their paper or poster research at the conference. The proof of acceptance and   participation in the conference, and the supervisor 's signature will be   needed to obtain the credit.

Cumulative Assessment

All doctoral students should complete   the cumulative assessment before the start of the fall semester of the third   academic year. The purpose of cumulative examination is to drive students to   improve their self-study ability, to strengthen literature reading and to   broaden their knowledge. The assessment can include basic theoretical   knowledge, advanced literature and so on. The assessment method can be written   examination, literature reading report or simulated writing of fund   application. Each institute shall organize at least four examinations each   year, each of which shall be divided into three grades of 0,0.5 and 1. The   number of examinations shall not be limited, and the examination results may   be accumulated, and each doctoral student shall obtain at least 2 points   before passing, specific assessment content and assessment methods by the   professional grasp.

Teaching practice

Graduate Students Work as teaching   assistants for at least one course and complete a certain teaching assistant   workload (not less than 64 hours) for 1 credit, assessed by the teacher in   charge of the experiment or classroom teaching.

Before defense

Thesis Proposal

Students shall be required to   participate in the thesis proposal before the end of the summer semester of   the first academic year, and those who do not participate in the thesis   proposal organized by the Institute for special reasons shall not participate   in the graduation thesis defense. Students should achive the agreement with the institution about the   time of thesis proposal before they leave school for research. The assessment method   includes written report and oral report. The specific requirements are   detailed in the annual notice.

Before the end of the   summer semester of the first academic year

Literature Review and Research Report

Students should complete the   literature review and research report before the end of the summer semester   of the first academic year. They   are supposed to give at least one presentation on the topic that is not   directly related to their research area. At least three mentors,except their own mentor, are needed in the   assessment team. The specific requirements are detailed in the annual notice.

Mid-term Examination

This examination consists of a   formal oral presentation and a academic report about literature review in the   related research field and current research progress. The oral examination   consists of a 15 minutes presentation for master students and 20 minutes for   Ph.D. students to a 5-member examination committee. The exam will take place   in the 3rd semester of the second academic year.

If a student fails in this   section, the student should do examination again within two months. In the   case of second time failure, the examination committee will in writing report   to the college and student generally will be dropped out.

At the end of second   academic year

Pre-defense

There should be a complete scientific   research system and achievements before the pre-defense, with the report of   the research results as the main criteria, and basically meet the scientific   research requirements (depth and workload) for the adoption of the standards.   Those who are qualified in pre-defense may submit their papers for   examination and defense. If the   defendant fails, the defense shall be postponed until six months have passed   before he can apply for a new defense. The specific requirements are set out   in the regulations of the college.

 

Thesis

1.    The author should understand   fair thoroughly the academic development and recent advance in selected   research fields.

2.    The dissertation is   clearly stated in topics, and logically structured.

3.    The dissertation   will be evaluated and must be signed by supervisor.
